How does it work?

The Ventrilo program uses what is called VOIP or Voice Over Internet Protocol, much in the ways that many of the new Internet Phone providers are using.  Though it does differ in some ways, such as:

• Cost – You can rent server space for as many people as you want.  Common server size is 25 to 50 slots, which allows 25 to 50 people to connect to the server.  You can have a 25-slot server for as little as $14.00 per month.
• Usage – Ventrilo is different from a regular phone because instead of having a one to one conversation for a phone number you have dialed you are able to talk almost like if you were in a chat room or on a party line, everyone can talk but you also have the freedom of moving to different rooms for more private conversation.
• Quality control – Many of the VOIP telephone providers do not allow you the option of having high different sound qualities.  With Ventrilo you get to pick if you want a high, mid or low quality audio.  Ventrilo also has a low impact on your Internet connection; the VOIP phone companies often increase your latency or ping because their adapters flood the Internet connection with data. The standard setting only requires 3KBPS of data outbound and 3KBPS of data inbound per person speaking.
• Cheap to use – The only thing you will need to purchase is a server which you rent monthly and a microphone or headset with and integrated microphone which you can easily get for $10.00, the download of the client software is free.
• Compatibility -- Ventrilo works with both IBM compatible PC's and the Mac, many other voice programs do not, so if you have cross platform gamers you still get them all on the same server with the same program and a Linux version is in development, so no matter what you use you can get on and start chatting.
